The Origin of the Name of Jinan Why is the city called Jinan? In ancient times, a river named Ji Shui originated from Wangwu Mountain in Henan and flowed into the sea at Shandong Peninsula. At that time, Ji Shui, the Yellow River, the Huaihe River and the Changjiang River were the four biggest rivers in China. Later, the upper reaches of Ji Shui changed and the lower reaches were named Daqing River, but it was still called Ji Shui. In the fifth year of Xianfeng Period of the Qing Dynasty (in 1855), the Yellow River at Tongwaxiang of Henan burst and changed its course. Water flooded into Daqing River, occupied its riverbed and flowed into the sea. It was called the Yellow River afterwards. The name of Ji Shui disappeared. Today, the Yellow River in the north suburbs of Jinan is the Daqing River in the past which is flowing on the old waterbed of Ji Shui. Jinan is located to the south of Ji Shui, so, it has been called Jinan.(“nan”, in Chinese, means South) since the Han Dynasty.
