久居济南的人，几乎都知道大明湖里有“四怪”——蛇不现，蛙不鸣，恒雨不涨，久旱不涸。 随着科学技术的进步，大明湖“蛇不见，蛙不鸣”的自然生态之谜早已被解开。原来，“蛇不见”是因湖内鱼鹰和其他水禽较多，而它们正是蛇的天敌。济南城里的青蛙从来是不叫的。城里的青蛙虽然不叫，但是一到城外，蛙声呱躁，能让你彻夜难眠。两相比较，不能不使人感到奇怪。因而多少年来，成为人们关心和颇感兴趣的问题。传说，当年乾隆皇帝下江南，路过济南时，住在大明湖畔。由于蛙声喧扰，影响睡眠，他便下令不准城内青蛙再叫。从此，济南城里听不到蛙叫，直到现在。所以，每当有人问起济南青蛙不叫得原因时，老人们总以此为答。其实这只是传说，没有科学依据。根据现在科学的解释，这是因为济南城里从地下涌出的泉水，水温较低，青蛙生活在这里，不能发情，因而也就不叫。等到泉水流出城外，汇流地上，水温增高，青蛙在这里生活正常，到了发情时期，自然要叫。这和来过济南的乾隆皇帝毫无关系。至于大明湖“恒雨不涨，久旱不涸“，则与大明湖所处的特殊地理环境和自然构成条件密切相关。大明湖是由济南众多泉水汇流而成。泉水由南岸流入，水溢时便可从宋代修建于北岸的北水门流出，流入小清河，东注渤海，这种优良的疏通渠道是其他许多天然湖泊所不具备的。而大明湖的湖底为不透水的火成岩，致使源源不断流注湖中的泉水不能下泄，因而就造成了“恒雨不涨，久旱不涸”，使湖水常年保持较固定的水位。 The Four Strange Phenomena about the Daming LakeNearly all the people who have lived in Jinan for a long time know that there are four strange phenomena about the Daming Lake-----there are no snakes in the lake, the frogs don’t croak and the water of the lake does not rise in the rainy season or dry up in the dry season. With the development of science and technology, people have found the answers to the first two mysteries. There are many ossifrages and water birds in the lake which are the natural enemies of the snakes. As a result, snakes can hardly be found in the lake.Frogs in Jinan city never croak while they croak noisily outside the city which made people feel very puzzled and interested. According to the legend, when Emperor Qian Long of the Qing Dynasty visited Jinan, he lived near the Daming Lake and could not fall asleep for the croaks of the frogs. So, he ordered the frogs in the city not to croak any longer. Since then, we can not hear the croaks in the city. This is only a legend without scientific basis. In fact, the spring water gushing out of the ground has a low temperature. The frogs living in the water can not become estrous. As a result, they do not croak. When the springs flow out of the city and the water temperature rises, frogs can lead a normal life. When they are estrous, they will involuntarily croak. It has no connection with Emperor Qian Long.The constant water level of the lake is connected with its special geological conditions and the natural environment. Daming Lake is formed by a number of springs. Spring water flows into the lake by the south bank and overflows into Xiaoqing River and the Bohai Sea by the floodgate which was built on the north bank in the Song Dynasty. This excellent drainage system can hardly be found in other natural lakes. The bottom of the Daming Lake is composed of nonporous igneous stones which stops the spring water from infiltering into the ground. As a result, the water remains at a fixed level.
